Yes, you read that right. Sadly, it does not seem like Momomo and Momomomo have recovered enough from their injuries to continue in the 2018 Winter MarbleLympics. Thankfully, Team Momo has been able to find marble athletes to join the team for the rest of the season. While Mimo would hypothetically be able to join the starting roster once again, Team Momo has accepted Prim and Rima from Team Primary in the first team merger in the history of the MarbleLympics, despite their names not ending in -mo. Mimo will remain on the team as an alternate, while Prim and Rima will participate in group events and may even have the chance to compete individually. The two were chosen based on their close ties to Team Momo, along with their great performance in Qualifications and continued training despite not qualifying.
Now, we could theorize all we want about the future of Team Momo (now Team Momary with the merger), but that would ultimately be disrespectful to the team, who I’m sure are grieving over Momomo and Momomomo’s withdrawal. Neither Mo, Momo, and Mimo deserve that, nor do Momomo and Momomomo as they work towards a full recovery in the future, and certainly not Prim and Rima. This is not the time to further your opinion that “Team Momo has fallen from grace for good,” this is not the time to theorize about a possible brawl occurring between Prim, Rima, and the Balls of Chaos, this is not the time to wish injuries upon other marble teams and athletes, and this is not the time to question the validity of the International MarbleLympics Committee in their rulings. Instead, this should be a moment of reflection, remembrance, and warmest regards towards two great marble athletes who need our support more than ever.
With three Mo’s to her name, Momomo always pushed herself as an individual and as a momember of the team. Above all, she always wanted to rise up and set new standards for what Team Momo could do and be in the MarbleLympics. She proved this early on when she scored a 136 in the first event of the 2016 MarbleLympics; her and Momomomo with over a hundred points each helped to net the team their first bronze medal. In the sixth event, Momomo placed fifth, just short of qualifying for finals. Team Momo overall placed fourth in 2016, meaning that they were already qualified for the 2017 MarbleLympics. In the first event, Momomo got fifth place in finals, already placing her team on a good track for success. However, her teammate Mo got off to a bad start in the second event, dropping the team to twelfth place.
After Momomomo’s injury, Momomo had an understandably difficult time maintaining her focus for the rest of the 2017 MarbleLympics. This was made even more apparent in the fifth event, where Momomo held first place in the heat for the majority of the Hurdles race before losing out to the Pinkies in the last leg. When asked about it, she was very adamant and hard on herself: “I was so close…I was putting everything I could into the race, but once I started thinking about Momomomo, I just couldn’t…I lost the focus I needed to roll to the finish line.”
Momomo denies any romantic feelings towards Momomomo, but she clearly did care for him as one of her best friends. She recalled the hours after Momomomo’s injury as “the scariest moment of her life,” but did not want to go into further detail. Momomo continued through to the end of the 2017 season, and was disappointed to see Team Momo come in ninth place, but she was ready to rebuild the team and come back stronger in the 2018 Winter MarbleLympics. During the offseason, she trained harder than she ever had before, and with the rest of the team, got hyped up and ready for the new season. Momomo was, perhaps surprisingly, unfazed by her team’s low performance in 2018 Qualifications: “I mean…there’s only so many things you can control when you get out there and compete. I’m just overjoyed that Team Momo is, excuse the pun, in one piece again. And we made it. We’re going to keep making it. Don’t worry.”
Team Momo, though, seems to have started the 2018 Winter MarbleLympics on the wrong track. According to marble insiders, Momomo was overly distraught with her 112,8 cm performance in event two’s Ski Jump, which put the team in thirteenth for the event and in last place overall. They mentioned that Momomo, practically losing her marbles after she learned of their placing, feared most of all that this foreshadowed a repeat of last year’s mishap. She did not want that to happen to her or anyone on the team, least of all Momomomo.
She was reportedly calmer after the team performed better during event three, but after watching multiple teams get penalized in the bobsleds during the fourth event, Momomo became so anxious that we can only assume it took a physical toll on her, leading to her altitude sickness settling in as the bobsled came to a grinding halt in the snow. According to reports, she is fully conscious now and healing, but is not ready to make any personal public statements. All the best to Momomo as she recovers during her offseason and strives to return in future MarbleLympics.
Double the Momo, double the spirit. Momomomo instantly became a treasured marble athlete in the 2016 MarbleLympics not just because of his fun name, but his exceptionally well performances in competition. Momomomo scored 104 in the first event, which as stated before netted Team Momo their first bronze. In event four, Momomomo got third place in the heat of the Sand Rally, reaching fifth place in finals. In event seven, Momomomo made it all the way to fifty-three centimeters, taking another bronze medal for the team, and helped Team Momo win their first gold medal in the tenth event.
Momomomo avoided major attention in the 2017 MarbleLympics until his infamous injury during the third event, which removed him from the entire competition for the rest of the year (for more information on this, feel free to check out RetRollSpective #1 on Team Momo’s history) and raised the question of whether Momomomo would ever be able to compete again. Granted, none of that concerned Momomomo after he rolled off of the arena that day, where he was soon swarmed by marble doctors and the press. According to Momomomo, he doesn’t even remember what they were saying to him as he slid into unconsciousness: “I’m sorry, my momory is shattered from after I fell.” Momomomo shuddered. “I can make out some hazy images of Mo, Momo, and Momomo rushing over to me, along with Wispy and the other team. But the next thing I remomber is waking up in the infirmarblery, gazing over at the chunk blown out of me sitting on the table with a pair of tweezers and hot glue, and passing out again.”
Momomomo, understandably, declined to go further in regards to his stay in the infirmarblery. From what we could see, though, the chunk of marble was still gone from his body when we saw him appear in the stands during event six, and join Team Momo in the arena (using a crutch) upon their bronze medal win in event seven. Perhaps Momomomo will be more comfortable to tell his story as time goes on, but now is clearly not the time to ask for more.
We can assume that during the offseason Momomomo’s surgeries went successfully and that he began to train for 2018 Qualifications. He appeared in public for the first time since event seven of the 2017 MarbleLympics in the 2018 Draw for Qualifications. Momomomo drew nearly-universal fan support from his return, though some questioned that it was actually Momomomo competing.
To this, Momomomo chuckled and said, “Have you lost your marbles? The IMC would never allow a marble to impersonate as another marble for the MarbleLympics. You may think it’s difficult to tell from far away, but up close it’s pretty easy to see the Super Glue permanently embedded inside my swirls of dark-green, yellow, and blue.”
After they qualified, Momomomo did not compete with Team Momo in the 2018 MarbleLympics until the third event, where they rose out of dead last overall by placing ninth in the Halfpipe event. Momomomo was reportedly optimistic about the team’s future, and remained high-spirited even after Mimo replaced Momomo for the retry during the Bobsled event. But as Team Momo raced to make up for lost time, the marble athletes at the front narrowly cut off the last corner, and Momomomo slammed into it, blacking out instantly. When he woke up, he was being rolled away from the Arctic Circle by doctors, back to the infirmarblery. Thankfully, Momomomo seems to be doing far better than he was months ago, but is being advised by doctors to not rejoin Team Momo this year. While he heals, he is disappointed that he cannot compete and prove how far he has come, but wishes all the best to Team Momary and other marble athletes in the rest of the 2018 MarbleLympics.
As does MSPN—our warmest regards to Momomo, Momomomo, Team Momary, and the rest of the 2018 MarbleLympics teams and marble athletes. Stay safe and roll on!
